top five

lately, kayla and i have been playing a new game. i guess you could say we made it up. it happened one day at the table in the dining room (don’t all great things happen at the dinner table?). it’s called “top five.” basically, it consists of us guessing what the other’s top five favorite things are: artists, places we want to visit, etc. below are some pictures to represent our top five favorite artists. can you guess who’s top five they are?

first set of top five:

COLUMBIA RECORDS ONE DIRECTION TAKE ME HOME buble  demi swift hunter

second set of top five:

new mumford new ellie new imagine  fall out boy  monsters

if you guessed that the first set is amanda’s and the second set is kayla’s, then you must know us pretty well.

DIY tea cart

lately, i’ve been perusing pinterest and have found myself to be all about the bar carts. i especially have been loving this awesome cart, this colorful cart, and this bar cart from abeautifulmess.com. i knew i wanted one in our apartment, but there were a few problems. first, i’m the only one the drinks alcohol and i don’t drink it enough to require a cart designated for alcohol storage. second, i couldn’t find one that i liked enough to buy online or in stores. enter in goodwill.

this past week, kayla and i were at goodwill shopping for halloween costumes and i came across this cart for $9.99:

i immediately knew it was the cart for us. it was rusty and had cobwebs all over, but i saw it had some good bones and loved its industrial feel. problem solved. that only left the problem of not really needing a bar cart. enter in a tea cart.

i drink tea like it’s my job. i love every flavor but my favorites are peppermint herbal and english breakfast. an idea popped in my head as i was scanning the cart over in goodwill and i decided to go with it: a diy tea cart! so i bought it, stuffed it in kayla’s car and took it home to give it some tlc. i went with some rust-oleum enamel spray paint in a moss green and gave the cart a quick few coats and viola! a beautiful new cart:

after it dried, i stocked the cart with my different tea flavors, some honey and sweetener, lemons, some tea mugs, and some other random items to spruce up the visual appeal of the cart. it now sits in our dining room and i am absolutely in love!

singin in the rain

my birthday is in july. however, my aunt is the spectacular kind and waited until today to give me my birthday present. it began with my cousin, trey, and his girlfriend, katy, picking me up after a long, hard clinical day. i was not told where we were going and after a few wrong turns and a flip of the hazard signs switch, we pulled over and trey told us we were supposed to be somewhere called “cheekwood.” (side note: i live about 15 minutes from cheekwood and we had driven about 30 minutes in the opposite direction). we finally arrived at cheekwood, a place i have loved dearly since my move to this great city four years ago. it is a botanical garden and art museum built on an old estate and mansion and every now and then they have great art installations that take over the entire property. the past couple weeks there has been an installation by bruce munro called “lights at cheekwood.” when we arrived, it was raining. and by the time we left, it was pouring.

but there’s something about rain that fills my heart. i love the tickle of the drops on my arms. i love pretending i’m a ballerina and twirling and leaping into puddles. most of all, i love singing “singin in the rain” while i’m getting soaked to the bone.

i believe that choosing to see the good stuff in life is the only way to enjoy it. so i chose to forget about how long it finally took us to get there. i chose to disregard my emotionally taxing day at clinical. i chose to love the rain. so thank you, my dear aunt and cousins, for a wonderful gift in the beautiful rain and art museum. y’all really know how to get on this girl’s good side.

have a happy weekend! choose to see the good stuff.

delicately rough

I recently picked up the most delicate dress from target. It has tool as the skirt and a lace bodice. The only problem I saw with the skirt was that it didn’t really fit into my current sense of style. Lately, I’ve been all about the grunge look and a ballerina-inspired skirt didn’t quite fit with the rest of the clothes I’ve been wearing. Enter in Kayla and an afternoon of experimenting with different looks. We finally came up with something I would wear:

The tutu dress paired with a geo print sweater and some biker boots makes the delicacy a bit more dramatic.

dressing down

amanda has the tendency to overdress when apartment 2120 is going out on public. i’m talking a dress and heels when going to the grocery market. so one thing she does to dress down is layer a t-shirt over the dress and swap out the heels for sneakers.

this particular t-shirt was way to long (it used to be a night gown!) so amanda cut it. don’t be afraid to make things work for you the way you want them to!

happy dressing!

tradition

captain and sissy have a new tradition: cracker barrel. we went tonight and drooled over their meatloaf dinner plate.
